Auto Insurance in Chesapeake, VA: Coverage for Families, Bridge Commutes, and Rural Roads

Illustration of a car on an open road across the plains with the text Auto Insurance Chesapeake, Virginia

Chesapeake is one of the largest cities by area in Virginia, mixing suburban neighborhoods with farmland and wetlands to the south. Commuters cross bridges on I-64, I-464, and the Dominion Boulevard corridor, and families with teen drivers are common.

This guide covers the coverage questions Chesapeake drivers ask most, the Virginia rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Chesapeake drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Chesapeake, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Chesapeake: what shapes your rate

Chesapeake drivers cover a lot of ground.

Bridge commutes

The I-64 High Rise Bridge area and other crossings are bottlenecks for commuters to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Liability limits above the minimum and UM/UIM help protect you.

Teen drivers

Families adding teen drivers should ask about good student and driver-training discounts before the license date.

Deer

Deer collisions are common on Virginia roads, especially in the fall and at dawn and dusk. They are covered under comprehensive, not collision.

Tidal flooding and storms

Hampton Roads sees frequent tidal flooding, nor'easters, and hurricanes. Flood damage to a car is covered under comprehensive, not by a home flood policy.

Virginia rules every Chesapeake driver should know

Virginia minimum coverage (policies effective on or after January 1, 2025)
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury liability$50,000 per person / $100,000 per accidentInjuries you cause to others
Property damage liability$25,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
Uninsured/underinsured motoristAt least the same minimumsYour injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no or too little insurance
  • Insurance is now mandatory. Virginia ended the option to pay a $500 uninsured motor vehicle fee instead of buying insurance on July 1, 2024. Owners who cannot show proof of coverage when asked can have their license, registration, and plates suspended and owe a $600 noncompliance fee.
  • Higher minimums. Minimum bodily injury limits rose from 30/60 to 50/100 on January 1, 2025, and minimum UM/UIM limits rose with them.
  • Stronger underinsured motorist coverage. Since July 1, 2023, your underinsured motorist coverage is no longer reduced by the at-fault driver's liability payment unless you elect that in writing, so it can pay on top of their coverage. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Contributory negligence. Virginia is one of the few states that still follow contributory negligence. If you are found even slightly at fault, you may be barred from recovering from the other driver, which makes your own collision, medical payments, and UM/UIM coverages especially important.
  • SR-22 and FR-44. Some violations require an SR-22, generally for three years. After a DUI, Virginia requires an FR-44 with higher limits of 100/200/50, generally for three years. See high-risk auto insurance.

Chesapeake auto insurance FAQs

When should I add my teen driver?

Most insurers require a teen to be listed once licensed. Call before the license date so coverage is in place on day one.

Is hitting a deer covered?

If you carry comprehensive, an animal collision is usually covered, minus your deductible.

How does underinsured motorist coverage work in Virginia now?

Since July 2023, your underinsured motorist coverage generally pays on top of the at-fault driver's liability payment instead of being reduced by it, unless you elect otherwise in writing. Higher UM/UIM limits are one of the best values in Virginia.

Should I carry medical expense benefits?

Medical expense benefits pay medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault, which matters in a contributory negligence state. The coverage is optional, so ask for it.

Can I still pay a fee instead of buying insurance in Virginia?

No. Virginia ended the uninsured motor vehicle fee option on July 1, 2024. Every registered vehicle must now carry insurance.

Do I need full coverage in Chesapeake?

Virginia requires 50/100/25 liability and UM/UIM coverage. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

What does contributory negligence mean for my claim?

If you are found even slightly at fault, you may not be able to recover from the other driver. Your own collision, medical expense, and UM/UIM coverages help protect you.
