Illustration of a car on a coastal road beside the water with the text Auto Insurance Wilmington, North Carolina

Wilmington sits on the Cape Fear coast, where hurricanes have flooded roads and cut the city off for days. Beach traffic to Wrightsville and Carolina Beach, river bridge crossings, and UNCW students shape local driving.

This guide covers the coverage questions Wilmington drivers ask most, the North Carolina rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Wilmington drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Wilmington, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Wilmington: what shapes your rate

Coastal weather is the biggest risk to many Wilmington cars.

Hurricanes and flooding

Wind, flood, and falling-tree damage to a car are covered under comprehensive. Insurers often stop writing new coverage once a storm threatens, so set it up before hurricane season.

Beach and bridge traffic

Summer traffic to the beaches and crossings over the Cape Fear River lead to frequent fender benders. Liability limits above the minimum and UM/UIM help protect you.

College students

Students on a parent's policy may qualify for good student discounts, and the policy should show where the car is garaged.

Contributory negligence

Because even partial fault can block recovery from the other driver, your own collision and medical payments coverage matter more in North Carolina.

North Carolina rules every Wilmington driver should know

North Carolina minimum coverage (policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025)
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury liability$50,000 per person / $100,000 per accidentInjuries you cause to others
Property damage liability$50,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
Uninsured/underinsured motorist$50,000 / $100,000 / $50,000Your injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no or too little insurance
  • Higher minimums since 2025. North Carolina raised its minimums from 30/60/25 to 50/100/50 for policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, and made UM/UIM coverage mandatory on every policy.
  • Stronger underinsured motorist coverage. Under the 2025 changes, underinsured motorist coverage pays in addition to the at-fault driver's liability payment instead of being reduced by it. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Contributory negligence. North Carolina is one of the few states that still follow contributory negligence. If you are found even slightly at fault, you may be barred from recovering from the other driver, which makes your own collision, medical payments, and UM/UIM coverages especially important.
  • Safe Driver Incentive Plan. Tickets and at-fault crashes add insurance points that raise your premium by set percentages. One point alone means a 30% increase. Points generally count for three years, and some serious violations now count for five.
  • Newly licensed drivers. For drivers first licensed on or after July 1, 2025, the inexperienced-operator surcharge now lasts up to eight years, declining over time.
  • Insurance lapses. Insurers notify the DMV when coverage ends. If you do not respond in time, the DMV can revoke your plate and charge civil penalties. Turn in your plate before canceling insurance on a car you are getting rid of.

Wilmington auto insurance FAQs

Is hurricane flood damage to my car covered?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible.

Can I add comprehensive when a hurricane is coming?

Usually not. Insurers commonly suspend new coverage once a hurricane watch or warning is issued. Set up comprehensive before hurricane season.

Can my child stay on our policy while at UNCW?

Often, yes, if they are still part of your household. The policy should show the car is garaged in Wilmington.

What does contributory negligence mean for my claim?

If you are found even slightly at fault, you may not be able to recover from the other driver. Your own collision, medical payments, and UM/UIM coverages help protect you.

What are the minimum car insurance limits in North Carolina?

For policies issued or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, North Carolina requires 50/100/50 liability plus uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at the same limits.

Do I need full coverage in Wilmington?

North Carolina requires liability and UM/UIM coverage. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

How do insurance points work in North Carolina?

Under the Safe Driver Incentive Plan, tickets and at-fault crashes add points that raise your premium by set percentages; one point means a 30% increase. Points generally count for three years, and some serious violations count for five.
