Fort Lauderdale is a city of canals and waterfront neighborhoods, where heavy rain and hurricanes can flood streets quickly. Commuters use I-95, I-595, and US-1, and winter brings seasonal residents and visitors.
This guide covers the coverage questions Fort Lauderdale drivers ask most, the Florida rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Driving in Fort Lauderdale: what shapes your rate
Water and traffic shape most Fort Lauderdale claims.
Hurricanes and flooding
Wind, storm surge, and flood damage to a car are covered under comprehensive, not by a home flood policy. Insurers usually stop writing new coverage once a storm watch is issued, so set it up before hurricane season.
I-95 and I-595 commuting
I-95 and I-595 are among the busiest roads in South Florida. Bodily injury liability and uninsured motorist coverage help protect you.
Seasonal residents
If you spend part of the year elsewhere, keep Florida's required PIP and property damage in force while you are away to avoid a lapse.
Boats and trailers
A boat needs its own policy, and a trailer may need physical damage coverage of its own.
Coverage priorities for Fort Lauderdale drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Home near canals or the coast | Comprehensive on every vehicle | Flood damage is a comprehensive claim. |
| No bodily injury coverage | Bodily injury liability and UM | Protects your savings and your own injuries. |
| Part-year resident | Keep required coverage in force | Avoid a lapse while away. |
| Boat owner | Separate boat policy plus trailer coverage | Your auto policy does not cover the boat. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
Florida rules every Fort Lauderdale driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Personal injury protection (PIP) | $10,000 | Your own medical bills and part of lost wages, regardless of fault |
| Property damage liability | $10,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
| Bodily injury liability | Not required for most drivers | Injuries you cause to others; strongly recommended |
- No-fault PIP. Florida is a no-fault state. Your own PIP pays first for your injuries no matter who caused the crash. To use PIP you generally must get medical care within 14 days, and medical benefits are limited to $2,500 unless a qualifying provider finds an emergency medical condition. Bills to repeal PIP were filed in 2026 but did not pass.
- Bodily injury liability is not required, but it matters. Florida does not require most drivers to carry bodily injury liability, so a minimum policy does not pay for injuries you cause to others. That leaves your savings exposed if you are sued, which is why most drivers should carry it.
- Uninsured motorist coverage. When you buy bodily injury liability, uninsured motorist coverage is included unless you reject it in writing. With many uninsured drivers on Florida roads, it is one of the most valuable coverages you can carry. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Fault rules. Since Florida's 2023 tort reform, you generally cannot recover damages from another driver if you are more than 50% at fault. At 50% or less, your recovery is reduced by your share.
- SR-22 and FR-44. Some violations require an SR-22. After a DUI conviction, Florida requires an FR-44 with much higher liability limits of 100/300/50, generally kept for at least three years. See high-risk auto insurance.
- Keep coverage continuous. Insurers report coverage to the state, and a lapse in PIP or property damage coverage can lead to license and registration suspension and reinstatement fees.
How to compare Fort Lauderdale quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| PIP deductible and medical payments | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

Fort Lauderdale auto insurance FAQs
Is flood damage to my car covered?
Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible.
Can I add comprehensive when a hurricane is coming?
Usually not. Insurers commonly suspend new coverage and changes once a hurricane watch or warning is issued for your area. Set up comprehensive before hurricane season.
Should I carry uninsured motorist coverage?
Many Florida drivers carry no bodily injury coverage at all. Uninsured motorist coverage pays for your injuries beyond PIP when the at-fault driver cannot. It is included with bodily injury liability unless you reject it in writing.
Does my car insurance cover my boat?
No. A boat needs its own policy.
Is Florida still a no-fault state?
Yes. Bills to repeal PIP were filed in 2026 but died in committee, so Florida still requires $10,000 of PIP and $10,000 of property damage liability.
Do I need bodily injury liability in Fort Lauderdale?
Florida does not require it for most drivers, but without it your policy will not pay for injuries you cause to others, and you could be sued personally. Most drivers should carry it, along with uninsured motorist coverage.
Do I need full coverage in Fort Lauderdale?
Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them. In Florida, comprehensive is also what pays for hurricane and flood damage to your car.
