Illustration of a car on a coastal road beside the water with the text Auto Insurance Staten Island, New York

Staten Island is New York City's most car-dependent borough, where many households own two or more vehicles and commute over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge or into New Jersey. The East Shore has also seen serious coastal flooding in major storms.

This guide covers the coverage questions Staten Island drivers ask most, the New York rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Staten Island drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Staten Island, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Staten Island: what shapes your rate

More Staten Islanders drive every day than residents of any other borough.

Bridge and expressway commutes

The Staten Island Expressway and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge are major bottlenecks. Liability limits above the minimum and SUM coverage help protect you.

Multi-car families

Keeping every household vehicle and driver on one policy usually earns a multi-car discount and keeps limits consistent.

Coastal flooding

East and South Shore neighborhoods can flood in major storms. Flood damage to a car is covered under comprehensive.

Teen drivers

Families adding teen drivers should ask about good student discounts and have new drivers complete driver education.

New York rules every Staten Island driver should know

New York minimum coverage
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury liability$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accidentInjuries you cause to others
Death liability$50,000 per person / $100,000 per accidentDeaths you cause in a crash
Property damage liability$10,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
No-fault personal injury protection$50,000Medical bills, a share of lost wages, and some other expenses for you and your passengers, regardless of fault
Uninsured motorist bodily injury$25,000 / $50,000Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance
  • No-fault insurance. New York is a no-fault state. Your own PIP pays your medical bills and part of your lost wages after a crash, no matter who caused it. You can sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering only if your injury meets the state's "serious injury" threshold.
  • Fault still matters. For vehicle damage and serious-injury claims, New York uses pure comparative negligence, so your recovery is reduced by your share of fault.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage is required. Optional supplementary coverage (SUM) raises those limits and adds underinsured protection, often up to your liability limits. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Insurance reporting and lapses. Insurers report coverage to the DMV electronically, and out-of-state insurance is not accepted for a New York-registered vehicle. If coverage lapses, the DMV can suspend your registration, and longer lapses can lead to license suspension.
  • Defensive driving discount. Completing a DMV-approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program course gives the principal operator at least a 10% reduction in the base rate of liability and collision premiums for three years.
  • State minimums are a floor. A $10,000 property damage limit is easily exceeded by a crash with a newer vehicle, leaving you responsible for the rest.

Staten Island auto insurance FAQs

Is flood damage to my car covered on Staten Island?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible.

Should every car in my household be on one policy?

Usually, yes. One policy tends to earn a multi-car discount and avoids gaps when drivers share vehicles.

Should I add SUM coverage?

Supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (SUM) raises your protection above the 25/50 minimum when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance. It is usually inexpensive relative to what it protects.

How can I lower my Staten Island premium?

Completing a DMV-approved defensive driving course (PIRP) gives the principal operator at least a 10% reduction on liability and collision base rates for three years. Comparing several insurers helps too.

Is New York a no-fault state?

Yes. Your own personal injury protection pays your medical bills and part of your lost wages regardless of fault. You can sue the other driver for pain and suffering only if your injury meets New York's serious injury threshold.

Do I need full coverage in Staten Island?

New York requires liability, $50,000 of no-fault PIP, and uninsured motorist coverage. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

How can I lower my car insurance in New York?

Completing a DMV-approved defensive driving course (PIRP) gives at least a 10% reduction on liability and collision base rates for three years. Comparing several insurers and keeping a clean record also help.
