Auto Insurance in Sacramento, CA: Coverage for Capital Commutes, Valley Fog, and Flooding

Illustration of a car on a road leading to a city skyline with the text Auto Insurance Sacramento, California

Sacramento is California's capital, where state workers and commuters use I-5, I-80, US-50, and Business 80 every day. Winter tule fog can cut visibility to almost nothing, and heavy rain has flooded parts of the region, which makes comprehensive coverage worth a close look.

This guide covers the coverage questions Sacramento drivers ask most, the California rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Sacramento drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Sacramento, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Sacramento: what shapes your rate

Valley weather and long commutes shape Sacramento auto claims.

Commuting

I-5, I-80, US-50, and Business 80 carry heavy commuter traffic, including long commutes from the suburbs. Liability limits above 30/60/15 and matching UM/UIM help protect you.

Tule fog

Dense winter fog can cause chain-reaction crashes on valley freeways. Collision covers your car; liability covers damage you cause to others.

Flooding

Heavy storms have flooded streets and neighborhoods near the rivers. Flood damage to a car is covered under comprehensive, not by a home flood policy.

Students and young drivers

Sacramento State and nearby UC Davis bring many young drivers. Students on a parent's policy may qualify for good student discounts.

California rules every Sacramento driver should know

California minimum liability limits (policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025)
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$30,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$60,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$15,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
  • Higher minimums. California raised its minimum limits from 15/30/5 to 30/60/15 on January 1, 2025, and a further increase to 50/100/25 is scheduled for 2035. Even the new minimums can be used up quickly in a serious crash.
  • Proposition 103. California insurers must weigh your driving safety record most heavily, followed by annual miles driven and years of driving experience. Other factors, such as where the car is garaged, can only be used as approved secondary factors, and insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate.
  • Good Driver Discount. Drivers who meet California's good driver standards are entitled to a rate at least 20% lower than they would otherwise pay. A clean record is the biggest single lever on a California premium.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is part of your policy unless you waive it in writing. It protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. California uses pure comparative negligence, so you can recover damages even if you share the blame, reduced by your percentage of fault.
  • Low-cost program and SR-22. Income-eligible drivers may qualify for the California Low Cost Auto Insurance Program. If the DMV requires an SR-22, your insurer files it, commonly for three years. See SR-22 insurance in California.

Sacramento auto insurance FAQs

Does car insurance cover flood damage in Sacramento?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible. Your home flood policy does not cover vehicles.

Who pays in a fog pileup?

Fault depends on the facts, such as speed and following distance. California uses pure comparative negligence, so costs can be split among several drivers by their share of fault.

How can I lower my Sacramento premium?

Under Proposition 103, drivers who meet California's good driver standards get a rate at least 20% lower. Keeping your record clean is the most effective way to lower your premium.

Should I carry medical payments coverage?

Medical payments coverage pays medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault. It is optional in California and usually inexpensive, so ask for a quote.

Is California a no-fault state?

No. California is an at-fault state with pure comparative negligence, so the driver who causes a crash is responsible, and your own recovery is reduced by any share of fault you carry.

Do I need full coverage in Sacramento?

California only requires liability coverage of at least 30/60/15. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them on a financed or leased vehicle.

Does my credit score affect my car insurance in California?

No. Under Proposition 103, California insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate. Your driving record, annual mileage, and years of driving experience matter most.
