Toyota RAV4 vs. Honda CR-V: Car Insurance Cost Comparison
The Toyota RAV4 vs. Honda CR-V insurance comparison is close for many drivers, because both are popular, well-equipped compact SUVs with hybrid options and common parts. The differences that matter most are theft exposure, which favors the RAV4 in recent data, the version you choose, and the fact that the RAV4 was completely redesigned for 2026.
This page compares what insurers look at for each SUV, where they differ, and how to decide based on your situation. It is an independent comparison by Blake Insurance Group, an independent agency, not a ranking or a quote. Any dollar figures you may see elsewhere, including in illustrations, are not a substitute for quotes on your own VIN and driver profile.

Side-by-side insurance factors
The table below compares the factors that most often affect insurance for these two SUVs. It reflects public data and our independent interpretation, not your premium.
| Factor | Toyota RAV4 | Honda CR-V |
|---|---|---|
| Current generation | All-new for 2026; hybrid and plug-in hybrid only | Since 2023; gas and hybrid |
| Powertrain choices | 2.5-liter hybrid (FWD or AWD); plug-in hybrid including GR Sport | 1.5-liter turbo gas; 2.0-liter hybrid |
| NICB 2025 theft ranking | Not in the top 10 | Ninth, with 9,809 thefts |
| HLDI theft claims (2022 to 2024 models) | RAV4 Prime 4WD among the least-stolen vehicles | CR-V Hybrid 4WD among the most-stolen vehicles |
| Rugged trims | Woodland | TrailSport Hybrid |
| Claim history for current generation | Limited, because the 2026 model is new | Several years of data |

The theft data is the most meaningful difference for insurance. Other factors, such as repair costs and safety technology, tend to be comparable between the two.
Theft data and what it means for your premium
Theft claims affect comprehensive coverage. The Highway Loss Data Institute's study of 2022 to 2024 models gave the CR-V Hybrid with four-wheel drive a relative whole-vehicle theft claim frequency of 340, where 100 is average, placing it 13th on its most-stolen list. The RAV4 Prime with four-wheel drive had a relative frequency of 5, among the lowest of any vehicle. Older CR-Vs also contribute to the CR-V's place on the National Insurance Crime Bureau's 2025 list.
What this means in practice: in areas where theft is common, some insurers may charge more for comprehensive on a CR-V, particularly a recent hybrid. A RAV4 may have an edge on that part of the premium. This is one factor among many, and your driving record, location, and coverage choices usually matter more.
If you choose a CR-V, ask about anti-theft discounts, consider a steering wheel lock or tracker, and keep comprehensive coverage in place.
The all-new 2026 RAV4 and insurance
When a model is redesigned, insurers initially have less claim data for the new version and rely partly on similar vehicles. The 2026 RAV4 is hybrid-only, with a plug-in hybrid option that includes a new GR Sport trim. Its price and technology differ from the previous RAV4, so a 2026 RAV4 may price differently from a 2025 model with the same insurer.
If you are deciding between a new 2026 RAV4 and a used earlier RAV4, or between a new RAV4 and a CR-V, get quotes on the exact VINs before you buy. Rates for new generations can also change as claim data accumulates over the first few years.
Hybrid, plug-in, and rugged trims
- Hybrids. Both SUVs offer hybrids with higher prices and battery components than gas models, which can raise collision and comprehensive costs. With the 2026 RAV4, every version is a hybrid or plug-in.
- Plug-in hybrid. The RAV4 plug-in hybrid typically costs more than other versions, which can raise physical damage premiums. Its predecessor's very low theft claim rate is a point in its favor.
- Rugged trims. The RAV4 Woodland and CR-V TrailSport Hybrid add rugged styling and equipment. If you add aftermarket accessories, list them and ask about custom equipment coverage.
- Gas CR-V. The CR-V's gas trims are typically less expensive to buy than its hybrids, which can make them less expensive to insure for physical damage.
Which SUV may fit which driver
Based on our independent analysis, here is how the trade-offs may play out:
- Drivers in high-theft areas may find the RAV4 slightly less expensive for comprehensive coverage with some insurers.
- Budget-focused buyers who want a lower purchase price may consider a gas CR-V, which can also mean lower physical damage premiums than a hybrid.
- Drivers who want a plug-in hybrid will find that option on the RAV4 rather than the CR-V.
- Families with teen drivers can reasonably choose either. Teen driver costs are driven mostly by the driver. See our guide to insurance for a new driver.
- Used-car shoppers should compare specific model years, since equipment and theft exposure vary.
How to compare RAV4 and CR-V quotes
- Use exact VINs or model years and trims for both SUVs.
- Keep liability limits, uninsured motorist coverage, deductibles, and add-ons identical.
- Use the same drivers, garaging address, and mileage for both.
- Compare at least three insurers; each may favor a different SUV.
- Check how each quote handles glass and sensor calibration, rental limits, and gap coverage.
Our car insurance comparison guide explains how to read quotes side by side, and our full coverage car insurance page explains what a complete policy usually includes.
Coverage to consider for either SUV
For a compact SUV that often carries family members, most drivers should consider liability limits well above the state minimum, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at matching limits, collision and comprehensive on any newer or financed vehicle, rental reimbursement, and gap coverage on a new SUV financed with a small down payment. Because both SUVs use windshield-mounted cameras, ask how each policy handles glass replacement and calibration.
Comparing older RAV4s and CR-Vs
On the used market, both SUVs are plentiful. Previous-generation RAV4s, sold through the 2025 model year, were offered with a gas engine as well as hybrid and plug-in versions, unlike the hybrid-only 2026 model. Previous CR-Vs, sold through 2022, have different equipment from the current generation. Because theft exposure, safety equipment, and repair costs vary by model year, compare used SUVs of similar age, mileage, and trim, and ask for quotes on the specific VINs. On an older, paid-off SUV, compare the yearly cost of collision and comprehensive with its value before deciding how much coverage to keep.
What you need to compare RAV4 and CR-V quotes
Have these ready so both quotes are accurate and comparable.
- VINs or exact trims for both SUVs. This confirms the generation, powertrain, and drivetrain.
- Driver details. Dates of birth, license numbers, and recent accidents or violations.
- Your current declarations page. So both quotes use matching coverage.
- Garaging address and mileage. Local theft and accident rates affect both quotes.
- Financing or lease plans. Lender requirements and whether you want gap coverage.
RAV4 vs. CR-V insurance FAQs
Is a RAV4 or CR-V cheaper to insure?
It depends on the driver, location, version, and insurer. Recent theft data favors the RAV4, which may help with comprehensive pricing in some areas, but quotes on both with identical coverage are the only reliable answer.
Why is the CR-V on most-stolen lists?
NICB data counts thefts of all model years, and older CR-Vs contribute to the total. HLDI's insurance claim data also showed a high theft claim rate for the 2022 to 2024 CR-V Hybrid 4WD.
Does the all-new 2026 RAV4 cost more to insure?
It may differ from older RAV4s because of its price, technology, and limited claim history. Compare quotes on the exact model year.
Is a hybrid more expensive to insure than a gas CR-V?
It can be slightly, due to a higher price and battery components. The difference varies by insurer.
Are the dollar amounts in comparison graphics accurate for me?
No illustration can reflect your premium. Prices depend on your driver profile, location, coverage, and insurer, so request quotes on your own vehicle.
Which is safer?
Both offer standard collision-avoidance technology. Check the current IIHS and NHTSA ratings for the exact model year you are considering.
Can I get a discount for anti-theft devices on a CR-V?
Some insurers offer anti-theft discounts for approved devices or systems. Ask each company what it recognizes.
Is the RAV4 GR Sport more expensive to insure?
It is a plug-in hybrid trim with a higher price than most RAV4s, which can raise collision and comprehensive costs. Get a quote on the exact trim before buying.
