Jeep Wrangler Car Insurance: Rates and Coverage Options

Jeep Wrangler car insurance needs more thought than most vehicles because Wranglers are so often modified, driven off-road, and fitted with removable tops and doors. Those features affect what can be stolen or damaged, how claims are paid, and which coverages you need to add.

This guide explains how insurers view the Wrangler, how to protect aftermarket parts and removable panels, what the Wrangler 4xe recall means, and how to choose coverage for trail use. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many Jeep owners.

How insurers look at a Wrangler

A Wrangler's insurance price reflects both the vehicle and how it tends to be used:

  • Trim and powertrain. Rubicon, high-performance V8 versions, and the 4xe plug-in hybrid cost more than base trims, which raises collision and comprehensive premiums.
  • Two-door or four-door. The body style changes the price and is rated separately.
  • Soft top or hard top. Soft tops can be cut by thieves or vandals, and hard tops and doors are valuable if stolen.
  • Modifications. Upgrades raise the vehicle's value and repair costs, and they must be listed to be covered properly.
  • Use. Off-road driving increases the chance of collision and undercarriage damage.

As with any vehicle, your driving record, location, mileage, and coverage choices also play a major role.

Covering removable tops, doors, and accessories

Removable tops and doors are part of the Wrangler's appeal and a common source of claims. How they are covered depends on whether they are installed and whether they came from the factory:

How Wrangler parts are typically treated by insurance
ItemTypical treatmentWhat to check
Factory top and doors, installedGenerally covered as part of the vehicle under comprehensive and collisionYour deductible and any glass or soft-top limits
Factory top or doors, removed and stored at homeMay not be covered by auto insurance while off the vehicle; homeowners or renters insurance may applyAsk both insurers how stored parts are treated
Aftermarket tops, doors, bumpers, and lightingCovered only up to a limited custom equipment amount on many policiesAdd custom parts and equipment coverage and keep receipts
Lift kits, wheels, and oversized tiresSame as other aftermarket equipmentList each modification and its cost
Personal items left in an open JeepNot covered by auto insuranceHomeowners or renters insurance may cover them

Coverage terms vary by insurer. Confirm how your policy treats each item before you need to file a claim.

Keep photos and receipts for all equipment. They make a claim much easier to document, especially for items that are expensive and specific to your Jeep.

Off-road driving and insurance

Collision coverage generally pays for damage from rollovers and impacts, including on trails, minus your deductible. Some policies exclude damage during races, competitions, or organized timed events, and a few limit coverage on certain terrain. Ask your agent to confirm how your policy treats off-road use.

Undercarriage damage from rocks is typically a collision claim. Mechanical wear, such as worn suspension parts, is not covered. Recovery from remote locations can be expensive. Check the towing distance limit on your roadside coverage, and consider an off-road recovery membership if you go far from pavement. Our roadside assistance page explains standard options.

Insuring a Wrangler 4xe

The Wrangler 4xe pairs a turbocharged engine with electric motors and a high-voltage battery that can be charged at home. It typically costs more than a gas Wrangler of a similar trim, which can raise physical damage premiums.

The 4xe has also been the subject of battery recalls. Under NHTSA recall 25V741000, reported in October 2025, Chrysler said the high-voltage battery in 2020 to 2025 Wrangler 4xe models may fail internally and cause a fire. Owners were told to park outside and away from structures and not to charge the vehicle until the remedy is completed. The remedy is a software update and battery replacement as needed, at no cost.

For insurance, the most important step is to get the recall repaired. Also check your homeowners policy: a vehicle fire in an attached garage can damage your home, and following the recall instructions helps protect both. You can check your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup.

Coverage most Wrangler owners should consider

  • Custom parts and equipment coverage for every modification and accessory.
  • Comprehensive for theft of tops, doors, and wheels, vandalism of soft tops, and weather damage.
  • Collision for on-road and off-road crashes and rollovers.
  • Liability above the state minimum and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at matching limits.
  • Gap coverage on a new Wrangler financed with little down, particularly a 4xe.
  • Rental reimbursement, since parts for modified Jeeps can take time to source.

Our full coverage car insurance guide explains how these coverages work together.

Ways to save on Wrangler insurance

  1. Compare several insurers. Companies treat modifications and off-road use differently.
  2. Secure removable parts. Use locking hardware for doors and tops, wheel locks, and a lockable storage box, and ask about anti-theft discounts.
  3. Store the Wrangler in a garage when possible, especially with a soft top.
  4. Bundle with homeowners or renters insurance.
  5. Choose sensible deductibles for comprehensive and collision.
  6. Keep modification records so you do not over- or under-insure the equipment.

Wrangler value and total loss settlements

Wranglers tend to hold their value, and modified Wranglers can be worth considerably more than a stock vehicle. If a Wrangler is totaled, the insurer pays its actual cash value, based on comparable vehicles, plus the value of listed custom equipment up to your coverage limit, minus your deductible. Undisclosed modifications may not be included. Before you need it, make sure your custom equipment limit reflects what you have actually invested, and update it each time you add parts.

Seasonal use, storage, and keeping coverage

Some owners treat a Wrangler as a second, fair-weather vehicle and store it for part of the year. It can be tempting to cancel insurance during storage, but that can create problems. Many states require continuous liability coverage on registered vehicles, and a lapse can lead to fines and higher rates later.

A better approach may be to ask your insurer about reducing coverage while the Jeep is stored, sometimes called storage or comprehensive-only coverage. It keeps protection against theft, fire, vandalism, and weather while the vehicle is parked, at a lower cost than full coverage. Before you drive again, you must restore liability and collision coverage. Rules differ by state and by lender; if the Wrangler is financed, the lender will usually require full coverage at all times.

If you store removable tops and doors at home during the summer, ask your homeowners insurer how they are covered there, and keep photos and serial numbers.

What you need for a Wrangler insurance quote

Wrangler quotes depend on equipment details, so gather these first.

  1. VIN, model year, and trim. This identifies the body style, engine, and whether it is a 4xe.
  2. A list of modifications. Lift kits, wheels, tires, bumpers, winches, lighting, aftermarket tops or doors, and their cost.
  3. Recall status for a 4xe. Whether recall repairs have been completed.
  4. Drivers and history. Dates of birth, license numbers, and recent accidents or violations.
  5. Garaging and use. Where the Jeep is parked and how often it is driven off-road.

Jeep Wrangler insurance FAQs

Is the Jeep Wrangler expensive to insure?

It is often moderately priced for a stock base model, but higher trims, the 4xe, modifications, and off-road use can raise the cost.

Are my Wrangler's doors and top covered if stolen?

Factory parts installed on the vehicle are generally covered under comprehensive. Parts stored off the vehicle and aftermarket parts may need other coverage. Check your policy.

Does insurance cover off-road damage?

Collision usually covers off-road crashes and rollovers, subject to your deductible. Some policies exclude racing or organized events.

Do I need custom equipment coverage?

If you have added lift kits, wheels, bumpers, or other upgrades, yes. Standard policies often cover only a limited amount of aftermarket equipment.

What should Wrangler 4xe owners do about the recall?

Check your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup, follow the park-outside and no-charging guidance until repaired, and get the free remedy done at a dealer.

Is a two-door Wrangler cheaper to insure than a four-door?

It depends on the insurer and trim. The two body styles are rated separately, so compare quotes on the exact vehicle.

Are items left in my open Jeep covered?

Personal belongings are not covered by auto insurance. Homeowners or renters insurance may cover them, subject to its deductible.

Can I reduce coverage while my Wrangler is in storage?

Many insurers offer reduced or comprehensive-only coverage for stored vehicles, which keeps theft and weather protection at a lower cost. Restore full coverage before driving, and check your state and lender rules first.
