Honda CR-V Car Insurance: What It Costs and How to Save
Honda CR-V car insurance is usually priced like other popular compact SUVs, but two details deserve attention: the hybrid versions cost more to buy and repair, and the CR-V appeared on the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the ten most stolen vehicles of 2025. Both affect the comprehensive and collision parts of your premium.
This guide explains how insurers look at the CR-V, how the gas and hybrid versions compare, what coverage fits a family SUV, and how to lower your premium without giving up protection. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many drivers.

What drives the cost of insuring a Honda CR-V
Insurers price a Honda CR-V from two sets of facts: the vehicle itself and the people who drive it. For the CR-V, the vehicle-related factors that matter most are:
- Powertrain. Hybrid trims have a higher purchase price and add a high-voltage battery and electric motors, which can raise collision and comprehensive costs
- Trim and wheels. Upper trims add larger wheels, more cameras, and premium equipment that cost more to replace
- Theft exposure. The CR-V's place on the most-stolen list can raise the theft portion of comprehensive coverage in some areas
- Safety equipment. Standard driver-assistance features may help prevent some crashes, but the sensors add to repair bills when a crash does happen
Driver facts usually carry more weight than the vehicle: the ages and records of everyone in the household, past claims, the ZIP code where the CR-V is parked, annual mileage, a credit-based insurance score where state law allows it, and the limits and deductibles you choose. For context, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reported an average auto insurance expenditure of $1,281.60 nationwide in 2023. Individual premiums land far above and below that figure, so treat it as background rather than a benchmark for your own quote.
Because every insurer weighs these facts differently, two companies can quote the same CR-V and the same driver hundreds of dollars apart. Our car insurance calculator shows how coverage choices move a premium, and our guide to car insurance quotes explains how to keep comparisons fair.
Gas and hybrid CR-V trims
Honda has offered the CR-V with a conventional turbocharged engine and with a hybrid system. The table groups recent trims by what tends to matter for insurance. Exact trim names change by model year.
| Trim group | Typical powertrain | Insurance considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Gas trims (such as LX and EX) | 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder | Lowest purchase price; usually the least expensive CR-V to insure |
| Hybrid sport trims (such as Sport and Sport-L) | Two-motor hybrid | Higher value and battery components can raise physical damage costs |
| Top hybrid trim (such as Sport Touring) | Two-motor hybrid with all-wheel drive | Highest replacement cost and the most technology |
Trim names reflect the sixth-generation lineup in general terms and vary by model year.
If you are deciding between a gas and a hybrid CR-V, ask for quotes on both VINs before you buy. The hybrid's fuel savings can be partly offset by a higher premium, depending on the insurer.
The CR-V and vehicle theft
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau's list of the most stolen vehicles of 2025, as reported by AAA Club Alliance in August 2026, the Honda CR-V ranked ninth nationally with 9,809 thefts. Two other Honda models, the Accord and the Civic, also made the top ten. Popular vehicles are targeted partly because their parts are in demand.
Theft is covered only under comprehensive coverage. If you dropped comprehensive to save money, a stolen CR-V would not be covered. To reduce the risk, park in a garage or well-lit area, never leave the key fob in the vehicle, keep valuables out of sight, and consider a tracking device. Some insurers offer a discount for anti-theft or tracking systems.
If your CR-V is stolen, report it to the police right away, then call your insurer. Prompt reports improve the chance of recovery.
Family drivers and the CR-V
The CR-V is a common choice for a household's newest driver because it is practical and easy to drive. Adding a teen raises the premium on any vehicle, often sharply. A few steps help:
- Ask about good student discounts, usually for a B average or better.
- Complete an approved driver training course if your insurer offers a discount for it.
- Consider a telematics program that rewards smooth braking and limited late-night driving.
- Assign the teen to the least expensive vehicle where your insurer allows it.
- Keep liability limits high, since young drivers are more likely to be in a crash.

Coverage to consider for a Honda CR-V
- Liability well above the state minimum. A family SUV often carries several passengers, and a crash can involve multiple injured people. Many households choose 100/300/100 or higher.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at matching limits, which protects everyone riding in your CR-V. See UM and UIM coverage.
- Collision and comprehensive on any CR-V that is financed, leased, or that you could not easily replace.
- Rental reimbursement with a daily limit that covers an SUV, not just a compact car.
- Roadside assistance if you do not have it through an auto club or the manufacturer.
- Child safety seats. Some insurers pay to replace car seats that were in the vehicle during a crash. Ask how your insurer handles them.
If you use the CR-V for paid deliveries, rideshare, or regular business errands, tell your agent. Personal policies commonly exclude those uses unless you add the right endorsement.
Repairs, parts, and claims on a CR-V
Repair costs drive the collision and comprehensive part of your premium, and they decide how smooth a claim feels. A few points apply to almost every modern CR-V:
- Sensor calibration. Cameras and radar used by driver-assistance features often sit behind the windshield, in the grille, or in the bumpers. After a windshield replacement or a minor bumper repair, those systems may need calibration, which adds cost. Ask whether your glass coverage includes it.
- Parts. Policies differ on whether repairs use new factory parts, aftermarket parts, or recycled parts. Read the parts language in your policy, and ask about an OEM parts endorsement if it matters to you.
- Choice of shop. In most states you can choose your repair shop. An insurer's preferred shop may offer a repair guarantee, but you are generally not required to use it.
- Supplements. Hidden damage is often found after a bumper or panel comes off. Shops send a supplement to the insurer, which can extend the repair time and the rental you need.
If you are unsure whether to file a small claim, compare the repair estimate with your deductible and ask your agent how a claim might affect renewal. See comprehensive vs. collision coverage for which coverage pays for which kind of damage.
Financed, leased, or paid off: matching coverage to how you own it
Financed or leased
Lenders and leasing companies require collision and comprehensive, often with a maximum deductible such as $500 or $1,000, and they must be listed on the policy as loss payee or additional insured. Leases often require higher liability limits as well. Check the contract before you shop so every quote meets it.
Gap and new car replacement
A new CR-V can be worth less than the loan balance for the first few years. Gap coverage pays the difference after a total loss, minus your deductible. Some insurers also offer new car replacement, which pays to replace a recent-model car with a new one of the same make and model. Compare the insurer's price with the gap product offered at the dealership.
Paid off
Once the loan is paid off, you choose the coverage. Many owners keep collision and comprehensive on a CR-V of this age and value, but raise the deductible to lower the premium. Revisit the decision every year or two as the vehicle ages.
Ways to save on Honda CR-V insurance
- Compare at least three insurers with identical limits and deductibles.
- Bundle home and auto, and insure every household vehicle on one policy.
- Ask about discounts for safety features, anti-theft devices, good students, and driver training courses.
- Raise deductibles to an amount you could comfortably pay.
- Pay in full or set up autopay and paperless billing if your insurer offers discounts for them.
- Consider a telematics program if your household drives carefully.
Avoid saving money by dropping liability limits to the minimum or leaving off household drivers. Both can leave you exposed after a serious crash, and an undisclosed driver can complicate a claim. See our list of car insurance discounts for more ideas.
What you need for a CR-V insurance quote
These details help insurers rate the right CR-V and match your coverage.
- VIN, model year, and trim. This tells the insurer the exact CR-V, including engine, drivetrain, and equipment.
- Every household driver. Names, dates of birth, license numbers, and driving history for anyone who lives with you and drives.
- Current declarations page. So new quotes match your limits, deductibles, and optional coverages.
- How you use the vehicle. Commuting distance, annual mileage, and any business, delivery, or rideshare use.
- Loan or lease details. The lienholder's name and any coverage or deductible requirements in the contract.
Honda CR-V insurance FAQs
Is the Honda CR-V expensive to insure?
It is usually priced like other compact SUVs. Hybrid trims, young drivers, and high-theft areas can push the price higher.
Does the CR-V Hybrid cost more to insure?
Often somewhat more, because it costs more to buy and repair. Compare quotes on both versions before you buy.
Is the CR-V a common theft target?
It ranked ninth on NICB's list of the most stolen vehicles of 2025. Comprehensive coverage pays for theft.
Do Honda Sensing features lower my premium?
Some insurers give safety-feature discounts, but the effect varies. The sensors also raise repair costs after a crash.
Is the CR-V expensive to insure?
The CR-V is generally priced like other vehicles in its class. Your drivers, location, coverage, and trim usually matter more than the model name.
Does all-wheel drive affect my premium?
It can slightly, mainly through the vehicle's value and repair cost. The effect is usually small compared with driver and location factors.
Will adding a teen driver raise my premium?
Yes, often significantly. Good student, driver training, and telematics discounts can soften the increase.
Are car seats replaced after a crash?
Some insurers pay to replace child safety seats that were in the vehicle during a crash. Ask your insurer how it handles them.
