Georgia Used Auto Dealer Bond: $50,000 Requirement and Cost
Georgia requires used motor vehicle dealers to file a surety bond with the Secretary of State. The bond was $35,000, and the Secretary of State has issued an updated $50,000 bond form for the 2026 renewal cycle, so new and renewing dealers should plan on $50,000. Bonds expire September 30 of even-numbered years, and published prices start around $250 for the two-year term.
This guide covers who needs the bond, the increase, the renewal cycle, and costs. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency, and a licensed agent can help with your bond and dealer insurance.

Who needs the bond
The Georgia Secretary of State requires used motor vehicle dealer (UCAR) applicants and licensees to file a surety bond, which protects purchasers of used motor vehicles. The same bond form has covered used motor vehicle dealers and parts dealers.
The increase to $50,000
The Secretary of State has published an updated $50,000 bond form, and SuretyBonds.com reports that dealers must file a $50,000 bond at renewal beginning July 1, 2026, replacing the old $35,000 bond, and that new applicants’ $35,000 bonds will be rejected. If you have a $35,000 bond, plan to increase it at your next renewal. Confirm current requirements with the Secretary of State.
Renewal cycle
Georgia used dealer licenses and bonds run on a two-year cycle, expiring September 30 of even-numbered years, with renewals beginning July 1 (Georgia Secretary of State).
How much a Georgia dealer bond costs
SuretyBonds.com lists Georgia used dealer bonds starting at $250 for the two-year term, varying by credit score.
Bond vs. dealer insurance
The bond protects buyers, not the dealership. Dealers usually also carry garage liability, dealer’s open lot, and commercial auto insurance. See our surety bond vs. insurance guide.
