Auto Insurance in Trenton, NJ: Coverage for State Commuters, Pennsylvania Crossings, and 2026 Minimums

Illustration of a car on a road leading to a city skyline with the text Auto Insurance Trenton, New Jersey

Trenton is New Jersey's capital, on the Delaware River across from Pennsylvania. State workers, Route 1 and I-295 commuters, cross-river trips, and theft shape what Trenton drivers need.

This guide covers the coverage questions Trenton drivers ask most, the New Jersey rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Trenton drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Trenton, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Trenton: what shapes your rate

The river and the capital shape Trenton driving.

Pennsylvania commutes

Your New Jersey policy covers you in Pennsylvania. Bridge and highway commutes call for higher liability limits and UM/UIM.

Vehicle theft

Car theft, especially of newer vehicles with keyless entry, has been a problem in parts of North Jersey. Comprehensive covers theft, and parking in a garage helps.

Street parking

Tight street parking leads to sideswipes, dings, and hit-and-runs. Collision and uninsured motorist property damage help when the other driver cannot be found or is uninsured.

Choosing your PIP limit

The $15,000 PIP minimum goes quickly after a hospital stay. Higher PIP limits cost more but protect your household better.

New Jersey rules every Trenton driver should know

New Jersey standard policy minimums (2026)
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$35,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$70,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$25,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
Personal injury protection (PIP)$15,000, with up to $250,000 for certain serious injuriesYour own and your household's medical costs, regardless of fault
Uninsured/underinsured motoristIncluded on the standard policy; available up to your liability limitsYour injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little
  • New 2026 minimums. A 2022 law raised New Jersey's standard policy minimums in two phases. Since January 1, 2026, new and renewal standard policies must carry at least 35/70/25 liability, and the law also raised uninsured and underinsured motorist minimums.
  • No-fault PIP. New Jersey is a no-fault state. Your own PIP pays your medical bills first, regardless of who caused the crash. PIP starts at $15,000 and can go to $250,000 or more, and certain catastrophic injuries are covered up to $250,000 whatever limit you choose.
  • Limited or unlimited right to sue. With the limited right to sue, which applies if you make no choice, you can sue for pain and suffering only for serious injuries such as a displaced fracture, significant scarring, or a permanent injury. The unlimited right to sue costs more but lets you sue for any injury.
  • The basic policy. The basic policy costs less but offers only $5,000 property damage, $15,000 PIP, no uninsured motorist coverage, and no bodily injury liability unless you add $10,000. It can leave you personally exposed after a serious crash, and the 2026 increases do not apply to it.
  • Driving uninsured. Driving without insurance brings fines, community service, and a license suspension, plus state surcharges. See high-risk auto insurance.

Trenton auto insurance FAQs

Am I covered when I drive into Pennsylvania?

Yes. Your New Jersey policy covers you in Pennsylvania and every other state. If you move, you need a policy in your new state.

Does my policy cover a stolen car?

Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. Theft of the car, and damage from a break-in, are comprehensive claims, subject to your deductible.

Is the basic policy a good idea?

For most drivers, no. It carries only $5,000 of property damage, no uninsured motorist coverage, and no bodily injury liability unless you add $10,000, which can leave your savings and wages exposed.

Is New Jersey a no-fault state?

Yes. Your own PIP pays your medical bills first after a crash, regardless of fault. Whether you can also sue for pain and suffering depends on the right-to-sue option you chose.

Did New Jersey's minimum coverage go up in 2026?

Yes. Since January 1, 2026, new and renewal standard policies must carry at least $35,000 per person and $70,000 per accident for injuries, plus $25,000 for property damage. The basic policy did not change.

Should I choose the limited or unlimited right to sue?

The limited right to sue lowers your premium but blocks pain-and-suffering claims unless your injury is serious. The unlimited option costs more. Ask us to quote both so you can compare the difference.
