Illustration of a car on a snowy road lined with trees with the text Auto Insurance Scranton, Pennsylvania

Scranton sits in the Lackawanna Valley where I-81, I-84, and the Northeast Extension meet, bringing heavy truck traffic. Steep hills in winter, deer, and potholes shape what Scranton drivers need.

This guide covers the coverage questions Scranton drivers ask most, the Pennsylvania rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Scranton drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Scranton, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Scranton: what shapes your rate

Interstates and weather shape Scranton claims.

Truck traffic

Interstates and warehouse corridors carry heavy freight. Crashes with large trucks can be severe, so higher liability limits and UM/UIM matter.

Winter weather

Snow, ice, and freezing rain cause slide-offs and chain-reaction crashes. Collision covers your car, and roadside assistance helps when you are stuck.

Deer on the road

Pennsylvania has one of the highest numbers of deer-collision claims in the country, peaking in fall. Hitting a deer is a comprehensive claim, not collision.

Potholes

Freeze-thaw cycles leave deep potholes. Pothole damage to your car is usually a collision claim, so your collision deductible applies.

Pennsylvania rules every Scranton driver should know

Pennsylvania minimum auto insurance requirements
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$15,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$30,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$5,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
First-party medical benefits$5,000Your own medical bills after a crash, regardless of fault
  • Some of the lowest minimums in the country. Pennsylvania's 15/30/5 limits are very low. The $5,000 property damage minimum will not replace most cars, and a single injury can exceed $15,000, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.
  • Limited tort or full tort. Limited tort lowers your premium, but you generally cannot sue for pain and suffering unless your injury is serious or another exception applies, such as an at-fault driver who was drunk or uninsured. Full tort costs more and keeps your full right to sue.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is optional, but insurers must offer it and you must reject it in writing. Pennsylvania also lets you stack UM/UIM across vehicles for higher limits. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. Pennsylvania uses modified comparative negligence. Your recovery is reduced by your share of the blame, and you cannot recover if you are more at fault than the other side.
  • Lapses and driving uninsured. If your coverage lapses, PennDOT can suspend your registration for three months. You can avoid the suspension if the lapse was short and you prove you did not drive, or once a year by paying a $500 civil penalty. Driving uninsured brings a fine of at least $300 plus three-month registration and license suspensions. See high-risk auto insurance.

Scranton auto insurance FAQs

Does my policy cover me if I hit a deer?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Hitting a deer is a comprehensive claim, subject to your deductible.

Are Pennsylvania's minimum limits enough?

Rarely. The $5,000 property damage minimum will not replace most cars, and one injury can exceed $15,000. Higher limits often cost little extra.

What is stacking UM/UIM coverage?

Stacking combines the uninsured motorist limits for each car on your policy. With two cars and $50,000 each, you could have up to $100,000 of protection. It costs more, and you can waive it in writing.

Is Pennsylvania a no-fault state?

Partly. Pennsylvania is a choice no-fault state: your own first-party medical benefits pay your medical bills first, and your limited or full tort choice decides whether you can sue for pain and suffering.

Do I need full coverage in Scranton?

Pennsylvania requires 15/30/5 liability and $5,000 of medical benefits. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

Should I choose limited tort or full tort?

Limited tort saves money but blocks most pain-and-suffering claims unless your injury is serious. Full tort costs more. Ask us to quote both so you can see the difference.
