Auto Insurance in San Diego, CA: Coverage for Military Families, Border Trips, and Freeway Commutes
San Diego is home to one of the largest military communities in the country, sits next to the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere, and relies on I-5, I-15, I-805, and SR-163 for daily commutes. Military moves, trips into Mexico, and wildfire season all shape the coverage San Diego drivers need.
This guide covers the coverage questions San Diego drivers ask most, the California rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.
Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves San Diego drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in San Diego, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in San Diego: what shapes your rate
Military life and the border make San Diego insurance different.
Military households
Service members at the area's Navy and Marine Corps installations move and deploy often. Some insurers offer military discounts and storage options for a car left behind during deployment.
Driving into Mexico
A U.S. auto policy generally does not satisfy Mexico's liability requirements, so you need a Mexican auto policy before driving into Tijuana. See Mexico car insurance.
Freeway commuting
I-5, I-15, I-805, and SR-163 are busy at rush hour. Liability limits above 30/60/15 and matching UM/UIM help protect you in multi-car crashes.
Wildfire in the backcountry
East County and inland neighborhoods face wildfire risk. Fire damage to a car is covered under comprehensive.
Coverage priorities for San Diego drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Service member deploying | Storage or reduced coverage while away | Protects the car without a lapse. |
| Trips into Tijuana | A Mexican auto policy for each trip or an annual policy | Your U.S. policy is generally not enough in Mexico. |
| Daily freeway commuter | Higher liability and UM/UIM | Freeway crashes can involve several vehicles. |
| Home in East County | Comprehensive on every vehicle | Fire damage is a comprehensive claim. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
California rules every San Diego driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $30,000 | Injuries you cause to one other person |
| Bodily injury, per accident | $60,000 | Injuries you cause to two or more people |
| Property damage | $15,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
- Higher minimums. California raised its minimum limits from 15/30/5 to 30/60/15 on January 1, 2025, and a further increase to 50/100/25 is scheduled for 2035. Even the new minimums can be used up quickly in a serious crash.
- Proposition 103. California insurers must weigh your driving safety record most heavily, followed by annual miles driven and years of driving experience. Other factors, such as where the car is garaged, can only be used as approved secondary factors, and insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate.
- Good Driver Discount. Drivers who meet California's good driver standards are entitled to a rate at least 20% lower than they would otherwise pay. A clean record is the biggest single lever on a California premium.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is part of your policy unless you waive it in writing. It protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Fault rules. California uses pure comparative negligence, so you can recover damages even if you share the blame, reduced by your percentage of fault.
- Low-cost program and SR-22. Income-eligible drivers may qualify for the California Low Cost Auto Insurance Program. If the DMV requires an SR-22, your insurer files it, commonly for three years. See SR-22 insurance in California.
How to compare San Diego quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| Medical payments | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

San Diego auto insurance FAQs
Does my California auto insurance cover me in Tijuana?
Generally, not for Mexico's liability requirements. Buy a Mexican auto policy before you cross.
Can I keep my car insured while I deploy?
Yes. Many insurers offer storage or comprehensive-only options. Ask before reducing coverage so you do not create a lapse.
I just moved to San Diego on orders. Do I need a California policy?
If you register your vehicle in California, you need a policy meeting at least 30/60/15. Some service members keep home-state registration; ask us how that affects your coverage.
How can I lower my San Diego premium?
Under Proposition 103, drivers who meet California's good driver standards get a rate at least 20% lower. Keeping your record clean is the most effective way to lower your premium.
Is California a no-fault state?
No. California is an at-fault state with pure comparative negligence, so the driver who causes a crash is responsible, and your own recovery is reduced by any share of fault you carry.
Do I need full coverage in San Diego?
California only requires liability coverage of at least 30/60/15. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them on a financed or leased vehicle.
Does my credit score affect my car insurance in California?
No. Under Proposition 103, California insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate. Your driving record, annual mileage, and years of driving experience matter most.
