Auto Insurance in Jersey City, NJ: Coverage for New York Commutes, Street Parking, and 2026 Minimums
Jersey City sits across the Hudson from Manhattan, so tunnel and Turnpike commutes, tight street parking, and dense traffic are part of daily driving. Theft, low-lying flooding, and New Jersey's 2026 minimums shape what drivers need.
This guide covers the coverage questions Jersey City drivers ask most, the New Jersey rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.
Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Jersey City drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Jersey City, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Jersey City: what shapes your rate
Density shapes most Jersey City claims.
New York commutes
Your New Jersey policy covers you in New York. Tunnel, bridge, and Turnpike traffic raise the risk of multi-car crashes, so higher liability and UM/UIM limits matter.
Street parking
Tight street parking leads to sideswipes, dings, and hit-and-runs. Collision and uninsured motorist property damage help when the other driver cannot be found or is uninsured.
Vehicle theft
Car theft, especially of newer vehicles with keyless entry, has been a problem in parts of North Jersey. Comprehensive covers theft, and parking in a garage helps.
Flooding
Heavy rain and storm surge flood low-lying streets. Flood damage is covered only under comprehensive, so do not drop it to save money.
Coverage priorities for Jersey City drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Daily commuter | 100/300/100 liability and matching UM/UIM | Crashes can exceed minimums. |
| Car parked on the street | Comprehensive and collision | Theft, sideswipes, and flooding. |
| Household with dependents | Higher PIP limit | $15,000 goes quickly. |
| Any driver | Quote both right-to-sue options | Compare the price difference. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
New Jersey rules every Jersey City driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $35,000 | Injuries you cause to one other person |
| Bodily injury, per accident | $70,000 | Injuries you cause to two or more people |
| Property damage | $25,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
| Personal injury protection (PIP) | $15,000, with up to $250,000 for certain serious injuries | Your own and your household's medical costs, regardless of fault |
| Uninsured/underinsured motorist | Included on the standard policy; available up to your liability limits | Your injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little |
- New 2026 minimums. A 2022 law raised New Jersey's standard policy minimums in two phases. Since January 1, 2026, new and renewal standard policies must carry at least 35/70/25 liability, and the law also raised uninsured and underinsured motorist minimums.
- No-fault PIP. New Jersey is a no-fault state. Your own PIP pays your medical bills first, regardless of who caused the crash. PIP starts at $15,000 and can go to $250,000 or more, and certain catastrophic injuries are covered up to $250,000 whatever limit you choose.
- Limited or unlimited right to sue. With the limited right to sue, which applies if you make no choice, you can sue for pain and suffering only for serious injuries such as a displaced fracture, significant scarring, or a permanent injury. The unlimited right to sue costs more but lets you sue for any injury.
- The basic policy. The basic policy costs less but offers only $5,000 property damage, $15,000 PIP, no uninsured motorist coverage, and no bodily injury liability unless you add $10,000. It can leave you personally exposed after a serious crash, and the 2026 increases do not apply to it.
- Driving uninsured. Driving without insurance brings fines, community service, and a license suspension, plus state surcharges. See high-risk auto insurance.
How to compare Jersey City quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| PIP limit | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

Jersey City auto insurance FAQs
Am I covered when I drive into New York?
Yes. Your New Jersey policy covers you in New York and every other state. If you move to New York, you need a New York policy.
Does my policy cover a stolen car?
Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. Theft of the car, and damage from a break-in, are comprehensive claims, subject to your deductible.
Is the basic policy a good idea?
For most drivers, no. It carries only $5,000 of property damage, no uninsured motorist coverage, and no bodily injury liability unless you add $10,000, which can leave your savings and wages exposed.
Is New Jersey a no-fault state?
Yes. Your own PIP pays your medical bills first after a crash, regardless of fault. Whether you can also sue for pain and suffering depends on the right-to-sue option you chose.
Did New Jersey's minimum coverage go up in 2026?
Yes. Since January 1, 2026, new and renewal standard policies must carry at least $35,000 per person and $70,000 per accident for injuries, plus $25,000 for property damage. The basic policy did not change.
Should I choose the limited or unlimited right to sue?
The limited right to sue lowers your premium but blocks pain-and-suffering claims unless your injury is serious. The unlimited option costs more. Ask us to quote both so you can compare the difference.
