Auto Insurance in Erie, PA: Coverage for Lake-Effect Snow, Winter Roads, and I-90 Travel

Illustration of a car on a snowy road lined with trees with the text Auto Insurance Erie, Pennsylvania

Erie sits on Lake Erie and gets some of the heaviest lake-effect snow of any city in the country. Winter whiteouts on I-90 and I-79, deer, and Pennsylvania's low minimums shape what Erie drivers need.

This guide covers the coverage questions Erie drivers ask most, the Pennsylvania rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Erie drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Erie, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Erie: what shapes your rate

Snow shapes most Erie claims.

Lake-effect snow

Sudden bands of heavy snow off Lake Erie cause whiteouts and pileups on I-90. Collision and roadside assistance are essential.

Deer on the road

Pennsylvania has one of the highest numbers of deer-collision claims in the country, peaking in fall. Hitting a deer is a comprehensive claim, not collision.

Potholes

Freeze-thaw cycles leave deep potholes. Pothole damage to your car is usually a collision claim, so your collision deductible applies.

Property damage limits

The $5,000 property damage minimum will not cover most crashes. Many drivers choose $50,000 or $100,000 for little extra cost.

Pennsylvania rules every Erie driver should know

Pennsylvania minimum auto insurance requirements
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$15,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$30,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$5,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
First-party medical benefits$5,000Your own medical bills after a crash, regardless of fault
  • Some of the lowest minimums in the country. Pennsylvania's 15/30/5 limits are very low. The $5,000 property damage minimum will not replace most cars, and a single injury can exceed $15,000, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.
  • Limited tort or full tort. Limited tort lowers your premium, but you generally cannot sue for pain and suffering unless your injury is serious or another exception applies, such as an at-fault driver who was drunk or uninsured. Full tort costs more and keeps your full right to sue.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is optional, but insurers must offer it and you must reject it in writing. Pennsylvania also lets you stack UM/UIM across vehicles for higher limits. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. Pennsylvania uses modified comparative negligence. Your recovery is reduced by your share of the blame, and you cannot recover if you are more at fault than the other side.
  • Lapses and driving uninsured. If your coverage lapses, PennDOT can suspend your registration for three months. You can avoid the suspension if the lapse was short and you prove you did not drive, or once a year by paying a $500 civil penalty. Driving uninsured brings a fine of at least $300 plus three-month registration and license suspensions. See high-risk auto insurance.

Erie auto insurance FAQs

What should I keep in my car for winter?

Roadside assistance coverage, a charged phone, blankets, a shovel, and a scraper. Lake-effect squalls can strand drivers for hours.

Does my policy cover me if I hit a deer?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Hitting a deer is a comprehensive claim, subject to your deductible.

Are Pennsylvania's minimum limits enough?

Rarely. The $5,000 property damage minimum will not replace most cars, and one injury can exceed $15,000. Higher limits often cost little extra.

Is Pennsylvania a no-fault state?

Partly. Pennsylvania is a choice no-fault state: your own first-party medical benefits pay your medical bills first, and your limited or full tort choice decides whether you can sue for pain and suffering.

Do I need full coverage in Erie?

Pennsylvania requires 15/30/5 liability and $5,000 of medical benefits. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

Should I choose limited tort or full tort?

Limited tort saves money but blocks most pain-and-suffering claims unless your injury is serious. Full tort costs more. Ask us to quote both so you can see the difference.
