Columbus is Ohio's largest and fastest-growing city. Commuters use I-270, the Outerbelt, along with I-70, I-71, and SR-315, and Ohio State University brings tens of thousands of students and game day crowds.
This guide covers the coverage questions Columbus drivers ask most, the Ohio rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Driving in Columbus: what shapes your rate
Growth has brought more traffic and more construction to Columbus.
Outerbelt and downtown commuting
I-270 and the I-70/I-71 split downtown are busy at rush hour. Liability limits above 25/50/25 and UM/UIM help protect you.
Ohio State students and game days
Students on a parent's policy may qualify for good student discounts. Football Saturdays bring heavy traffic and crowded parking around campus.
Construction
Road widening and new development bring work zones and gravel. Glass damage is usually a comprehensive claim.
Winter roads and potholes
Snow, ice, and potholes lead to slide-offs and wheel and suspension damage. These are usually collision claims, so choose a collision deductible you can afford.
Coverage priorities for Columbus drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Outerbelt commuter | Higher liability and UM/UIM | Freeway crashes can involve several vehicles. |
| College student | Correct garaging address and student discounts | The policy should match where the car is kept. |
| Financed or leased vehicle | Collision, comprehensive, and gap coverage | Lenders require physical damage coverage. |
| Rideshare or delivery driver | Rideshare endorsement | Personal policies may not cover app-based driving. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
Ohio rules every Columbus driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $25,000 | Injuries you cause to one other person |
| Bodily injury, per accident | $50,000 | Injuries you cause to two or more people |
| Property damage | $25,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
- Fault rules. Ohio is an at-fault state that uses modified comparative negligence. You can recover damages if you are 50% or less at fault, reduced by your share, but you recover nothing if you are found more than 50% at fault.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is optional in Ohio, so it may not be on your policy unless you ask for it. It protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Random insurance checks. The Ohio BMV randomly selects registered vehicles and asks owners to prove they had coverage on a specific date. Failing to respond, or driving uninsured, can lead to suspension of your license and registration, reinstatement fees, and an SR-22 requirement.
- SR-22 filings. If the BMV requires proof of financial responsibility, your insurer files an SR-22. Ohio recently shortened the filing period for many non-compliance cases, so confirm your exact period with the BMV. See high-risk auto insurance.
- State minimums are a floor. One serious injury or a crash with a newer vehicle can exceed 25/50/25, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.
How to compare Columbus quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| Medical payments | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

What if I am partly at fault for a crash?
In Ohio you can still recover if you are 50% or less at fault, reduced by your share. Above 50%, you recover nothing from the other driver.
