Tennessee requires 25/50/25 liability and checks coverage electronically, but many drivers still go uninsured. From Nashville interstates to mountain roads in East Tennessee, uninsured motorist coverage and higher limits matter here.

This guide covers Tennessee's insurance rules, the coverage choices that matter most, and links to our local guides for ten Tennessee cities. Compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms with one call.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Tennessee drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Tennessee, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Tennessee: what shapes your rate

Local conditions vary across Tennessee, but these risks come up statewide.

Interstate congestion

I-24, I-40, I-65, and I-440 are some of the most congested roads in the Southeast. Higher liability limits and UM coverage help protect you in multi-car crashes.

Severe storms and tornadoes

Spring storms bring hail, high wind, and tornadoes. Hail, wind, and falling-tree damage are comprehensive claims, so check your deductible.

Flash flooding

Heavy rain can flood low-lying roads quickly. Flood damage is covered only under comprehensive, so do not drop it to save money.

Uninsured drivers

Many Tennessee drivers carry little or no insurance. Keeping uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits protects you.

Vehicle theft

Car theft and break-ins are common. Comprehensive covers theft, and anti-theft devices and off-street parking help.

Tennessee rules every driver should know

Tennessee minimum liability limits
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$25,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$50,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$25,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
  • Low minimums. Tennessee's 25/50/25 limits can be used up quickly by a single injury crash or a collision with a newer vehicle, leaving you responsible for the difference.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage. Insurers must offer uninsured motorist coverage, usually at limits matching your liability coverage. You can reject it or choose lower limits in writing, but keeping it protects you when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. Tennessee uses modified comparative fault. Your recovery is reduced by your share of the blame, and you cannot recover if you are 50% or more at fault.
  • Electronic verification. The Department of Revenue checks registered vehicles through the Electronic Insurance Verification System. If it cannot confirm coverage, you get notices, then fees and possible registration suspension if you do not respond.
  • Driving uninsured. Driving without proof of insurance is generally a Class C misdemeanor with a fine of up to $300, and more serious charges can apply after an injury crash. See high-risk auto insurance.

Tennessee auto insurance FAQs

Does my policy cover tornado or hail damage?

Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. Hail, wind, tornado, and falling-tree damage are comprehensive claims, subject to your deductible.

Does my policy cover me while driving for Uber or Lyft?

Usually not while the app is on. Add a rideshare endorsement to cover the gap between your personal policy and the company's coverage.

Is the 25/50/25 minimum enough?

Rarely. A single hospital stay or a crash with a newer vehicle can exceed it, and you are personally responsible for the rest. Higher limits often cost little extra.

Does my policy cover a stolen car?

Only if you carry comprehensive coverage. Theft of the car, and damage from a break-in, are comprehensive claims, subject to your deductible.

Is Tennessee a no-fault state?

No. Tennessee is an at-fault state with modified comparative fault. The at-fault driver's liability insurance pays, and you cannot recover if you are 50% or more at fault.

Do I need full coverage in Tennessee?

Tennessee only requires 25/50/25 liability. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

Should I keep uninsured motorist coverage in Tennessee?

Yes, for most drivers. Insurers must offer it, and rejecting it requires a written rejection. It pays for your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little.
