Illustration of a car on a desert road below mountains with the text Auto Insurance State College, Pennsylvania

State College is home to Penn State, where football weekends bring more than 100,000 visitors to Beaver Stadium. Students, game-day traffic, mountain roads on I-99 and US-322, winter weather, and deer shape local driving.

This guide covers the coverage questions State College drivers ask most, the Pennsylvania rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves State College drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in State College, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in State College: what shapes your rate

Campus life shapes State College driving.

Students and young drivers

Good student and distant student discounts can lower premiums. A student away at school without a car may qualify for a lower rate.

Game-day traffic

Penn State home games flood local roads with visitors. Liability covers fender benders you cause, and comprehensive covers vandalism in crowded lots.

Deer on the road

Pennsylvania has one of the highest numbers of deer-collision claims in the country, peaking in fall. Hitting a deer is a comprehensive claim, not collision.

Winter weather

Snow, ice, and freezing rain cause slide-offs and chain-reaction crashes. Collision covers your car, and roadside assistance helps when you are stuck.

Pennsylvania rules every State College driver should know

Pennsylvania minimum auto insurance requirements
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$15,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$30,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$5,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
First-party medical benefits$5,000Your own medical bills after a crash, regardless of fault
  • Some of the lowest minimums in the country. Pennsylvania's 15/30/5 limits are very low. The $5,000 property damage minimum will not replace most cars, and a single injury can exceed $15,000, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.
  • Limited tort or full tort. Limited tort lowers your premium, but you generally cannot sue for pain and suffering unless your injury is serious or another exception applies, such as an at-fault driver who was drunk or uninsured. Full tort costs more and keeps your full right to sue.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is optional, but insurers must offer it and you must reject it in writing. Pennsylvania also lets you stack UM/UIM across vehicles for higher limits. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. Pennsylvania uses modified comparative negligence. Your recovery is reduced by your share of the blame, and you cannot recover if you are more at fault than the other side.
  • Lapses and driving uninsured. If your coverage lapses, PennDOT can suspend your registration for three months. You can avoid the suspension if the lapse was short and you prove you did not drive, or once a year by paying a $500 civil penalty. Driving uninsured brings a fine of at least $300 plus three-month registration and license suspensions. See high-risk auto insurance.

Discounts worth asking about in State College

  • Good student for a B average or better.
  • Distant student when the student leaves the car at home.
  • Multi-car when every household vehicle is on one policy.
  • The basics. Multi-policy, paid-in-full, automatic payment, paperless, continuous insurance, and vehicle safety discounts, where the insurer offers them.

Discount names, amounts, and availability vary by insurer.

Tickets, an accident, or a lapse? You still have options. Some insurers specialize in higher-risk drivers. See high-risk auto insurance or call 888-387-3687.

State College auto insurance FAQs

How can college students save on car insurance?

Ask about good student discounts for a B average or better and distant student discounts if the student leaves the car at home. Keeping the student on a parent's policy is usually cheaper than a separate policy.

Does my policy cover me if I hit a deer?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Hitting a deer is a comprehensive claim, subject to your deductible.

Are Pennsylvania's minimum limits enough?

Rarely. The $5,000 property damage minimum will not replace most cars, and one injury can exceed $15,000. Higher limits often cost little extra.

Is Pennsylvania a no-fault state?

Partly. Pennsylvania is a choice no-fault state: your own first-party medical benefits pay your medical bills first, and your limited or full tort choice decides whether you can sue for pain and suffering.

Do I need full coverage in State College?

Pennsylvania requires 15/30/5 liability and $5,000 of medical benefits. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

Should I choose limited tort or full tort?

Limited tort saves money but blocks most pain-and-suffering claims unless your injury is serious. Full tort costs more. Ask us to quote both so you can see the difference.
