Auto Insurance in Savannah, GA: Coverage for Port Trucks, Tourists, and Hurricane Season

Illustration of a car on a coastal road beside the water with the text Auto Insurance Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is home to one of the busiest container ports in the country, which keeps I-16, I-95, and local roads full of trucks. Tourists crowd the historic district, and the coast faces hurricanes and flooding.

This guide covers the coverage questions Savannah drivers ask most, the Georgia rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Savannah drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Savannah, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Savannah: what shapes your rate

Trucks, visitors, and storms shape most Savannah claims.

Port trucks

Container trucks crowd I-16, I-95, and the roads around the port. Crashes with large vehicles can be severe, so higher liability and add-on UM matter.

Tourist traffic

Visitors unfamiliar with the historic district's squares and one-way streets add fender benders and parking-lot damage.

Hurricanes and flooding

Wind, storm surge, and flood damage to a car are covered under comprehensive. Insurers often stop writing new coverage once a storm threatens.

Students and military households

SCAD and Georgia Southern students may qualify for good student discounts, and Hunter Army Airfield households benefit from planning coverage around deployments.

Georgia rules every Savannah driver should know

Georgia minimum liability limits
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$25,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$50,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$25,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
  • Uninsured motorist coverage. Georgia insurers must include uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits unless you reject it in writing. You can choose "add-on" coverage, which pays in addition to the at-fault driver's insurance, or "reduced" coverage, which is offset by it. Add-on costs a little more but protects you better. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. Georgia uses modified comparative negligence. You can recover damages only if you are less than 50% at fault, and your recovery is reduced by your share.
  • 2025 tort reform. For crashes on or after April 21, 2025, evidence that you were not wearing a seat belt can now be used in an injury case, and juries can see what medical providers were actually paid. Buckling up protects your claim as well as your health.
  • Insurance lapses. Insurers report coverage to the state electronically. A lapse of 10 or more days brings a $25 lapse fee, a reinstatement fee, and registration suspension if not resolved. Cancel your registration before canceling insurance on a car you no longer drive.
  • SR-22 and SR-22A. Serious violations can require an SR-22, and repeat uninsured driving can require an SR-22A, generally for three years. See high-risk auto insurance.
  • State minimums are a floor. One serious injury or a crash with a newer vehicle can exceed 25/50/25, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.

Savannah auto insurance FAQs

Is hurricane flood damage to my car covered?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible.

Can I add comprehensive when a hurricane is coming?

Usually not. Insurers commonly suspend new coverage once a watch or warning is issued. Set coverage before hurricane season.

Should I keep uninsured motorist coverage?

Yes, for most drivers. It pays for your injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little, and it stays on your policy unless you reject it in writing. Choose add-on coverage for the most protection.

Does not wearing a seat belt affect my claim in Georgia?

For crashes on or after April 21, 2025, the other side may use seat belt non-use as evidence in an injury case. Wearing your seat belt protects both your health and your claim.

Is Georgia a no-fault state?

No. Georgia is an at-fault state. You can recover from the other driver only if you are less than 50% at fault, and your recovery is reduced by your share.

Do I need full coverage in Savannah?

Georgia only requires liability coverage of at least 25/50/25. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.

Should I choose add-on or reduced uninsured motorist coverage?

Add-on coverage pays in addition to the at-fault driver's insurance, while reduced coverage is offset by it. Add-on usually costs a little more but can make a big difference after a serious crash.
