Driving in Columbus: what shapes your rate
In Columbus, military life shapes the right policy.
Military households
Service members who move or deploy often benefit from military discounts. If you deploy, Georgia lets active-duty members cancel registration with a form signed by their commanding officer, avoiding lapse fees.
PCS moves
When you move to or from Fort Benning, line up the new state's policy before the old one ends to avoid a lapse.
Alabama commutes
Your Georgia policy covers you in Alabama. Alabama follows contributory negligence, so a crash there may be handled under stricter fault rules.
Young drivers
Many service members are young drivers with new vehicles and loans. Gap coverage and military discounts can make a big difference.
Coverage priorities for Columbus drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Service member deploying | Cancel registration with Form MV-18G first | Avoid Georgia lapse fees. |
| New car with a loan | Collision, comprehensive, and gap coverage | Lenders require physical damage coverage. |
| PCS move | New policy before old coverage ends | Avoid a lapse. |
| Daily commuter | Higher liability and add-on UM | Protects you against uninsured drivers. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
Georgia rules every Columbus driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $25,000 | Injuries you cause to one other person |
| Bodily injury, per accident | $50,000 | Injuries you cause to two or more people |
| Property damage | $25,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
- Uninsured motorist coverage. Georgia insurers must include uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits unless you reject it in writing. You can choose "add-on" coverage, which pays in addition to the at-fault driver's insurance, or "reduced" coverage, which is offset by it. Add-on costs a little more but protects you better. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Fault rules. Georgia uses modified comparative negligence. You can recover damages only if you are less than 50% at fault, and your recovery is reduced by your share.
- 2025 tort reform. For crashes on or after April 21, 2025, evidence that you were not wearing a seat belt can now be used in an injury case, and juries can see what medical providers were actually paid. Buckling up protects your claim as well as your health.
- Insurance lapses. Insurers report coverage to the state electronically. A lapse of 10 or more days brings a $25 lapse fee, a reinstatement fee, and registration suspension if not resolved. Cancel your registration before canceling insurance on a car you no longer drive.
- SR-22 and SR-22A. Serious violations can require an SR-22, and repeat uninsured driving can require an SR-22A, generally for three years. See high-risk auto insurance.
- State minimums are a floor. One serious injury or a crash with a newer vehicle can exceed 25/50/25, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.
How to compare Columbus quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| Medical payments | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

Columbus auto insurance FAQs
What should I do with my car insurance if I deploy?
Georgia charges lapse fees if insurance ends while a vehicle is registered. Deployed active-duty members can cancel registration using Form MV-18G with a commanding officer's signature before canceling insurance.
Does my Georgia policy cover me in Phenix City?
Yes. Your policy covers you in Alabama. Alabama's fault rules are stricter, so a crash there may be handled differently.
Should I keep uninsured motorist coverage?
Yes, for most drivers. It pays for your injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little, and it stays on your policy unless you reject it in writing. Choose add-on coverage for the most protection.
Does not wearing a seat belt affect my claim in Georgia?
For crashes on or after April 21, 2025, the other side may use seat belt non-use as evidence in an injury case. Wearing your seat belt protects both your health and your claim.
Is Georgia a no-fault state?
No. Georgia is an at-fault state. You can recover from the other driver only if you are less than 50% at fault, and your recovery is reduced by your share.
Do I need full coverage in Columbus?
Georgia only requires liability coverage of at least 25/50/25. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.
Should I choose add-on or reduced uninsured motorist coverage?
Add-on coverage pays in addition to the at-fault driver's insurance, while reduced coverage is offset by it. Add-on usually costs a little more but can make a big difference after a serious crash.
