Auto Insurance in Atlanta, GA: Coverage for the Perimeter, the Connector, and Storm Season
Atlanta drivers face some of the worst congestion in the country on I-285, the Downtown Connector, and GA-400. Theft and break-ins, frequent hail and severe storms, and many uninsured drivers make coverage choices important here.
This guide covers the coverage questions Atlanta drivers ask most, the Georgia rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.
Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Atlanta drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Atlanta, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Atlanta: what shapes your rate
Congestion and theft drive most Atlanta claims.
The Perimeter and the Connector
Stop-and-go traffic on I-285 and the I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector means frequent crashes. Liability limits well above 25/50/25 and add-on UM help protect you.
Theft and break-ins
Vehicle theft and break-in damage are covered under comprehensive. Belongings stolen from the car are usually covered by renters or homeowners insurance.
Storms and hail
Severe storms bring hail, wind, and falling trees. Storm damage is covered under comprehensive, so a liability-only policy will not pay to repair your car.
Rideshare and delivery work
A personal policy usually does not cover you while a rideshare or delivery app is on. See rideshare insurance in Georgia.
Coverage priorities for Atlanta drivers
| Your situation | Coverage to review | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Daily Perimeter commuter | Higher liability and add-on UM | Freeway crashes can involve several vehicles. |
| Car parked on the street | Comprehensive with an affordable deductible | Theft and break-ins are comprehensive claims. |
| Car parked outside | Comprehensive | Hail and falling-tree damage. |
| Rideshare or delivery driver | Rideshare endorsement | Personal policies may not cover app-based driving. |
Examples only, not recommendations. Coverage availability and terms vary by insurer.
Georgia rules every Atlanta driver should know
| Coverage | Minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury, per person | $25,000 | Injuries you cause to one other person |
| Bodily injury, per accident | $50,000 | Injuries you cause to two or more people |
| Property damage | $25,000 | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
- Uninsured motorist coverage. Georgia insurers must include uninsured motorist coverage at your liability limits unless you reject it in writing. You can choose "add-on" coverage, which pays in addition to the at-fault driver's insurance, or "reduced" coverage, which is offset by it. Add-on costs a little more but protects you better. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
- Fault rules. Georgia uses modified comparative negligence. You can recover damages only if you are less than 50% at fault, and your recovery is reduced by your share.
- 2025 tort reform. For crashes on or after April 21, 2025, evidence that you were not wearing a seat belt can now be used in an injury case, and juries can see what medical providers were actually paid. Buckling up protects your claim as well as your health.
- Insurance lapses. Insurers report coverage to the state electronically. A lapse of 10 or more days brings a $25 lapse fee, a reinstatement fee, and registration suspension if not resolved. Cancel your registration before canceling insurance on a car you no longer drive.
- SR-22 and SR-22A. Serious violations can require an SR-22, and repeat uninsured driving can require an SR-22A, generally for three years. See high-risk auto insurance.
- State minimums are a floor. One serious injury or a crash with a newer vehicle can exceed 25/50/25, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.
How to compare Atlanta quotes apples to apples
A cheaper quote is only cheaper if the coverage matches. Line up each quote using the same limits and deductibles.
| Coverage | What to match |
|---|---|
| Bodily injury and property damage liability | Same limits, such as 100/300/100 |
| Uninsured and underinsured motorist | Same limits, ideally equal to your liability limits |
| Collision | Same deductible |
| Comprehensive | Same deductible |
| Medical payments | Same limit |
| Rental and roadside | Same daily and total limits and towing distance |

Atlanta auto insurance FAQs
Should I keep uninsured motorist coverage?
Yes, for most drivers. It pays for your injuries and damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little, and it stays on your policy unless you reject it in writing. Choose add-on coverage for the most protection.
Does not wearing a seat belt affect my claim in Georgia?
For crashes on or after April 21, 2025, the other side may use seat belt non-use as evidence in an injury case. Wearing your seat belt protects both your health and your claim.
Is car theft covered in Atlanta?
Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible.
Why do quotes vary across Atlanta ZIP codes?
Insurers rate by garaging address. Claim frequency, theft, and traffic differ across neighborhoods, so give us the exact address where the car is parked overnight.
Is Georgia a no-fault state?
No. Georgia is an at-fault state. You can recover from the other driver only if you are less than 50% at fault, and your recovery is reduced by your share.
Do I need full coverage in Atlanta?
Georgia only requires liability coverage of at least 25/50/25. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them.
Should I choose add-on or reduced uninsured motorist coverage?
Add-on coverage pays in addition to the at-fault driver's insurance, while reduced coverage is offset by it. Add-on usually costs a little more but can make a big difference after a serious crash.
