Auto Insurance in Los Angeles, CA: Coverage for Freeway Commutes, Theft, and Wildfire Risk

Illustration of a car on a road leading to a city skyline with the text Auto Insurance Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles drivers spend more time on freeways like the I-405, I-5, I-10, I-110, and US-101 than almost anyone in the country. Add high vehicle theft and break-in rates, expensive repairs, and wildfire seasons that can threaten whole neighborhoods, and the right coverage matters as much as the price.

This guide covers the coverage questions Los Angeles drivers ask most, the California rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Los Angeles drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Los Angeles, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Los Angeles: what shapes your rate

Traffic density, theft, and repair costs drive most Los Angeles claims.

Freeway congestion

Stop-and-go traffic on the 405, 10, 110, and 101 means frequent rear-end and lane-change crashes. Liability limits well above 30/60/15 and matching UM/UIM help protect you, especially with many expensive vehicles on the road.

Theft and break-ins

Vehicle theft, catalytic converter theft, and break-ins are covered under comprehensive, not liability. Belongings stolen from the car are usually covered by renters or homeowners insurance.

Wildfire

Fire damage to a vehicle is a comprehensive claim. If you live near the hills or canyons, make sure comprehensive is on every car you cannot afford to replace.

Rideshare and delivery work

Many Angelenos drive for rideshare or delivery apps. A personal policy usually does not cover you while an app is on. See rideshare insurance in California.

California rules every Los Angeles driver should know

California minimum liability limits (policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025)
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$30,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$60,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$15,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
  • Higher minimums. California raised its minimum limits from 15/30/5 to 30/60/15 on January 1, 2025, and a further increase to 50/100/25 is scheduled for 2035. Even the new minimums can be used up quickly in a serious crash.
  • Proposition 103. California insurers must weigh your driving safety record most heavily, followed by annual miles driven and years of driving experience. Other factors, such as where the car is garaged, can only be used as approved secondary factors, and insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate.
  • Good Driver Discount. Drivers who meet California's good driver standards are entitled to a rate at least 20% lower than they would otherwise pay. A clean record is the biggest single lever on a California premium.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. UM/UIM is part of your policy unless you waive it in writing. It protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Fault rules. California uses pure comparative negligence, so you can recover damages even if you share the blame, reduced by your percentage of fault.
  • Low-cost program and SR-22. Income-eligible drivers may qualify for the California Low Cost Auto Insurance Program. If the DMV requires an SR-22, your insurer files it, commonly for three years. See SR-22 insurance in California.

Los Angeles auto insurance FAQs

Is catalytic converter theft covered?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible. Liability-only policies do not cover theft from your own car.

Is my car covered if it is damaged in a wildfire?

Fire damage is covered under comprehensive. Insurers may pause new coverage when a fire is active nearby, so set coverage before fire season.

How can I lower my Los Angeles premium?

Under Proposition 103, drivers who meet California's good driver standards get a rate at least 20% lower. Keeping your record clean is the most effective way to lower your premium.

Should I carry medical payments coverage?

Medical payments coverage pays medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault. It is optional in California and usually inexpensive, so ask for a quote.

Is California a no-fault state?

No. California is an at-fault state with pure comparative negligence, so the driver who causes a crash is responsible, and your own recovery is reduced by any share of fault you carry.

Do I need full coverage in Los Angeles?

California only requires liability coverage of at least 30/60/15. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them on a financed or leased vehicle.

Does my credit score affect my car insurance in California?

No. Under Proposition 103, California insurers cannot use your credit history to set your auto rate. Your driving record, annual mileage, and years of driving experience matter most.
