Auto Insurance in Mobile, AL: Coverage for Hurricanes, Flooding, and Gulf Coast Traffic

Illustration of a car on a coastal road beside the water with the text Auto Insurance Mobile, Alabama

Mobile sits on the Gulf Coast at the head of Mobile Bay, where hurricanes and heavy rain can flood streets and damage cars quickly. I-10 traffic through the Wallace Tunnel and across the Bayway, plus port and industrial trucks, keep local roads busy.

This guide covers the coverage questions Mobile drivers ask most, the Alabama rules that apply, and how to compare quotes from several insurers on the same terms.

Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency based in Tucson that serves Mobile drivers by phone and online. We do not have an office in Mobile, and we compare options from the insurers we are appointed with for your exact garaging address.

Driving in Mobile: what shapes your rate

On the Gulf Coast, weather is often the biggest risk to your car.

Hurricanes and flooding

Flood and wind damage to a car is covered under comprehensive. Insurers often stop adding new coverage once a storm approaches, so set it up before hurricane season.

I-10 tunnel and Bayway

The Wallace Tunnel and the Bayway across Mobile Bay are major bottlenecks where crashes back up traffic quickly. Liability limits above 25/50/25 and matching UM/UIM help protect you.

Port and industrial traffic

The Port of Mobile and nearby plants bring heavy trucks to I-10, I-65, and local roads. Crashes with large vehicles can be severe.

Contributory negligence

Because even partial fault can block recovery from the other driver, your own collision and medical payments coverage matter more in Alabama.

Coverage priorities for Mobile drivers

Situations Mobile drivers often bring to us

Car at home during hurricane seasonComprehensive with an affordable deductibleFlood and wind damage are comprehensive claims.

Worried about shared-fault crashesCollision and medical paymentsYour own coverage pays even if you share fault.
Older paid-off carLiability, medical payments, and UM/UIM; weigh comprehensiveA flooded older car may be a total loss.

Alabama rules every Mobile driver should know

Alabama minimum liability limits
CoverageMinimumWhat it pays for
Bodily injury, per person$25,000Injuries you cause to one other person
Bodily injury, per accident$50,000Injuries you cause to two or more people
Property damage$25,000Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property
  • Contributory negligence. Alabama is one of the few states that still follows pure contributory negligence. If you are found even slightly at fault for a crash, you may be barred from recovering damages from the other driver. That makes your own coverages, such as collision, medical payments, and UM/UIM, especially important.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Insurers must offer UM/UIM, and you must reject it in writing if you do not want it. It protects you when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little. Learn more about UM/UIM coverage.
  • Insurance verification. Alabama checks registered vehicles against insurers' records through its Online Insurance Verification System. If coverage cannot be confirmed, the registration can be suspended.
  • SR-22 filings. If the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) requires proof of financial responsibility, your insurer files an SR-22, commonly for three years. ALEA tells you the exact period. See high-risk auto insurance.
  • State minimums are a floor. One serious injury or a crash with a newer vehicle can exceed 25/50/25, leaving you personally responsible for the rest.

Mobile auto insurance FAQs

Does car insurance cover hurricane flood damage in Mobile?

Yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible. Your home flood policy does not cover vehicles.

Can I add comprehensive right before a hurricane?

Often not. Insurers commonly suspend new coverage once a storm threatens. Set coverage before hurricane season.

Should I carry medical payments coverage?

Medical payments coverage pays medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault, which matters in a contributory negligence state. It is optional, so ask for it.

What does contributory negligence mean for my claim?

If you are found even slightly at fault, you may not be able to recover from the other driver. Your own collision, medical payments, and UM/UIM coverages help protect you.

Is Alabama a no-fault state?

No. Alabama is an at-fault state, and it follows pure contributory negligence, so being even partly at fault can bar you from recovering damages from the other driver. Your own collision, medical payments, and UM/UIM coverages help fill that gap.

Do I need full coverage in Mobile?

Alabama only requires liability coverage of at least 25/50/25. Collision and comprehensive are optional under state law, but a lender or leasing company will almost always require them on a financed or leased vehicle.

How long do I need an SR-22 in Alabama?

Commonly three years, but ALEA sets the exact period for your case. If the policy lapses, your insurer must notify ALEA and your license can be suspended again.
