Hyundai Elantra car insurance can be affordable, but theft is the issue to understand first. The Elantra was the most-stolen vehicle in the United States in 2025, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, largely because many older models lack an engine immobilizer. Newer Elantras built since late 2021 have one, and that difference can affect both your risk and your rate.

This guide explains which Elantras are affected, what Hyundai's anti-theft software update does, how insurers treat the issue, and how to find affordable coverage for any model year. Blake Insurance Group is an independent agency that can compare several insurance companies for many drivers.

The Elantra theft problem and what changed

Beginning around 2022, thieves widely shared a method for stealing certain Hyundai and Kia models that use a traditional turn-key ignition and lack an engine immobilizer, a device that prevents the engine from starting without the correct key. Thefts of those models rose sharply, and many older Elantras were affected.

Hyundai responded with a free software update for eligible vehicles that adds an ignition kill feature, so the car will not start using the popular theft method. Owners whose vehicles cannot receive the update have been offered alternatives such as steering wheel locks or reimbursement toward anti-theft devices through a class settlement. The Highway Loss Data Institute later found that theft claims for vehicles with the update were 46% lower overall, and whole-vehicle theft claims were 52% lower, than for comparable vehicles without it.

The trend is improving. The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports that Hyundai and Kia thefts have declined for three straight years, falling to 14% of all U.S. vehicle thefts in 2025, down from 21% in 2023.

Which Elantras are most affected

Theft risk depends mainly on the ignition type and model year. Use the table below as a starting point, then confirm your vehicle's eligibility for the software update with Hyundai using your VIN.

Hyundai Elantra theft exposure by equipment
VehicleTheft exposureWhat to do
Older Elantra with a traditional turn-key ignition and no immobilizerHighest; this is the group targeted in the theft waveGet the free software update if eligible, add a steering wheel lock, and keep comprehensive coverage
Older Elantra with push-button startLower; push-button models generally have an immobilizerStandard precautions; ask your insurer about anti-theft discounts
Elantra built since November 2021Lower; Hyundai says all vehicles built since then include an immobilizerStandard precautions; keep the window sticker or build information handy
Elantra Hybrid (2022 to 2024)Among the least-stolen vehicles in HLDI's study of those model yearsStandard precautions

Groupings are general. Eligibility for the software update and the exact equipment depend on your VIN.

If you are buying a used Elantra, ask the seller whether the anti-theft update has been completed and check for a sticker or service record. Some insurers ask about it during the quote.

How insurers treat Elantra theft risk

Theft affects comprehensive coverage, which pays if your car is stolen or damaged by vandalism, fire, weather, or hitting an animal. Insurers use claim data by model and area, so an affected older Elantra garaged where thefts are common may cost more to cover. During the peak of the theft wave in 2023, some insurers temporarily limited new policies for certain affected models in some cities. Underwriting rules change, so an independent agent can check which companies are currently writing your vehicle.

Ways to keep coverage affordable and accessible:

  • Complete the software update and keep proof. Ask whether the insurer offers credit for it.
  • Add a visible steering wheel lock or an approved tracking device, and ask about anti-theft discounts.
  • Raise the comprehensive deductible rather than dropping comprehensive. You keep theft protection while lowering the premium.
  • Park in a garage or well-lit area whenever possible.

Elantra, Elantra Hybrid, and Elantra N

Insurers rate each version separately:

  • Elantra (gas). The most common version and typically the least expensive to insure among current Elantras, apart from the theft considerations above for older models.
  • Elantra Hybrid. Costs more to buy and has a high-voltage battery, which can raise collision costs. HLDI data shows recent hybrids are rarely stolen.
  • Elantra N. A high-performance model with a turbocharged engine. Performance cars usually cost more to insure, and some insurers rate them like sports cars.

Hyundai also sells N Line trims, which add sportier styling and, on some model years, a more powerful engine without being full N models. Make sure the quote uses your exact VIN so you are not rated for the wrong version.

Affordable coverage options for an Elantra

The Elantra's lower purchase price works in your favor for collision coverage. To keep the overall premium manageable:

  1. Compare several insurers. Each weighs theft risk differently, so prices can vary widely for the same Elantra.
  2. Bundle home or renters insurance for a multi-policy discount.
  3. Consider telematics if you drive carefully. See our guide to usage-based insurance.
  4. Match coverage to the car's value. On an older, paid-off Elantra, compare the cost of collision with what the car is worth. Our comprehensive vs. collision coverage guide explains the difference between the two coverages.
  5. Keep liability limits strong. Saving money on the car is reasonable; saving it on liability can leave your finances exposed after a serious crash.

Insuring an Elantra for a student or new driver

The Elantra's modest price and good fuel economy make it a popular first car, and the 2026 sedan earned an IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK. Even so, premiums for drivers under 25 are high with any vehicle because of their higher crash risk. If a student or new driver will use an Elantra, these steps can help:

  • Choose the standard Elantra over the N. The high-performance Elantra N typically costs much more to insure for a young driver.
  • Prefer a newer model year if theft is a concern. Elantras built since November 2021 include an immobilizer, which reduces the theft exposure that affects many older models.
  • Ask about student discounts. Good student and driver training discounts are common. Some insurers also offer a discount when a student attends school far from home without the car.
  • Stay on a family policy. Adding a young driver to a parent's policy is usually less expensive than a separate policy, although every household is different.
  • Use telematics wisely. Careful young drivers can benefit from driving-behavior programs; risky habits can work against them with some insurers.

What you need for an Elantra insurance quote

For an Elantra, a few extra details help insurers rate theft risk accurately.

  1. VIN, model year, and trim. This identifies gas, hybrid, or N versions and the ignition type.
  2. Anti-theft status. Whether the Hyundai software update is complete, and any steering wheel lock, alarm, or tracker you use.
  3. Driver information. Dates of birth, license numbers, and recent accidents or violations for every driver.
  4. Current declarations page. To match your existing limits and deductibles.
  5. Garaging address. Where the car is parked overnight, and whether you have a garage.

Hyundai Elantra insurance FAQs

Why is the Hyundai Elantra stolen so often?

Many older Elantras with a traditional key ignition lack an engine immobilizer, which made them easier to steal once a theft method spread online. Hyundai says all vehicles built since November 2021 have an immobilizer.

Will the anti-theft software update lower my insurance?

It may help. Some insurers give credit for completed updates or anti-theft devices, and HLDI found the update reduced theft claims significantly. Ask each insurer how it treats the update.

Can I still get insurance on an older Elantra?

Yes. Coverage is widely available, although some insurers have restricted new policies on certain affected models in some areas. An independent agent can check which companies are writing your vehicle.

Is the Elantra N expensive to insure?

Usually more than a standard Elantra, because it is a performance model with higher speed potential and a higher price.

Should I drop comprehensive on an older Elantra?

Think carefully, because comprehensive is what pays if the car is stolen. Raising the deductible is often a better way to save.

Does the Elantra's safety rating affect my premium?

Strong crash protection can help limit injury claims over time, which insurers consider in their rates. The effect on any single policy varies by company.

What is an engine immobilizer?

It is an anti-theft device that prevents the engine from starting unless the correct key or key fob is detected. Its absence on many older Hyundai and Kia models with traditional keys is what made them easy theft targets.

Does the Elantra Hybrid cost more to insure?

It can cost slightly more for collision because it has a higher price and a high-voltage battery, but recent hybrids have very low theft claim rates. Compare quotes on the exact version.
